What is a Lunar Witch?

First of all, as with everything in spirituality, definitions will vary between each person, so my definition of a lunar witch might be different than what someone else says. I would call anyone who is drawn to cycles, especially the cycle of the moon, a lunar witch. A lunar witch is someone who finds comfort in the cyclical nature of our lives – whether it’s the lunar phase, seasons, wheel of the year, generational cycles (maiden, mother, crone, soul). A lunar witch, with a little practice, can likely guess where the moon is within its phase and astrological sign just by how they’re feeling that day. A lunar witch is someone who embraces the ebbs and flows of nature and understands that everything is always shifting and changing and uses that wisdom to anchor themselves with the shifting tides.

If you’re not sure if you’re a Lunar Witch or not (or if you have the capacity to become one) here are a few signs that the path of the Lunar Witch is calling you:

  1. You’re pulled to the path of a Lunar Witch
  2. You’re ready to embrace the ebbs and flows of life
  3. You’re pulled to selenite
  4. You’ve started noticing patterns in your life that are tied to the moon
  5. The predictable cyclical nature of life is a draw to you
  6. You like to make order out of chaos
  7. You spend a lot of time near or with water

Rituals of a Lunar Witch

Here are some examples of rituals a lunar witch might do on a daily basis. Some of these will take some intentional practice to really ground into the ritual.

  1. Track the moon phase AND which sign it’s in
  2. Before bed reflect (or journal) what emotions you felt and what themes came up today. What connections are there between the phase and the zodiac sign the moon was in that day?
  3. Change how you approach manifesting depending on which phase the moon is in
  4. Connect with water each day
  5. Release shame of shifting emotions
  6. Connect with other cycles – like the daily cycles, weekly cycles, wheel of the year, seasonal cycles, and generational cycles
  7. Attune to your menstrual cycle (if you have one): Notice the differences or similarities between your cycle and the moon.
  8. Connect with your selenite crystals
  9. Craft personal rituals based on the phase of the moon
  10. Create content based on the phase of the moon

How to become a Lunar Witch

If you want to become practicing Lunar Witch here’s what I did:

  1. I downloaded a moon tracking app (Full Moon is the free app I’ve used). If you want a hardcopy of all the moons of 2024, grab it here: Moons of 2024. It’ll have all of the signs the moon moves through each day as well as the four major phases of the moon.
  2. Each day when you wake up, check the app and see which phase the moon is in (New Moon, Waxing Moon, First Quarter Moon, Full Moon, Last Quarter Moon, Waning Moon) and which sign the moon is in (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces). Make note of it mentally.
  3. Throughout the day, notice your feelings and what has been coming up during the day. Maybe you’ve been feeling extra emotional, you have more energy than normal, your sibling called you out of nowhere.
  4. At the end of the day journal what came up for you and note the moon phase and sign.
  5. Repeat this process for a few lunar cycles
  6. Eventually, you’ll start to notice a pattern in your energy levels and themes that come up for you. You might notice you are always tired during the new moon and wired during the full moon. Or that you somehow exercise when the moon is in Aries and pull cards when its in Scorpio

Understanding the Moon’s Phases

Each phase of the moon offers unique energy that influences our emotions, intuition, and actions. Here’s how to align with the moon:

1. New Moon: Setting Intentions

The new moon is a time for planting seeds of intention. It’s a fresh start where you can visualize your dreams and set clear goals.

  • Rituals:
    • Write your intentions in your journal or grimoire.
    • Light a black or white candle to signify a clean slate.
    • Meditate on what you want to call into your life.

2. Waxing Crescent: Building Momentum

As the moon begins to grow, so does the energy for action and progress.

  • Rituals:
    • Create a vision board that reflects your intentions.
    • Take small, actionable steps toward your goals.
    • Perform a gratitude ritual to thank the universe for future blessings.

3. First Quarter: Taking Action

The first quarter moon challenges us to overcome obstacles and make decisive moves.

  • Rituals:
    • Write down one fear or challenge and burn it safely to symbolize release.
    • Focus on physical activity to channel courage and momentum.
    • Perform a manifestation spell with herbs like basil or cinnamon.

4. Waxing Gibbous: Refining Goals

With the moon nearly full, it’s time to refine your intentions and prepare for manifestation.

  • Rituals:
    • Review and adjust your goals based on progress so far.
    • Engage in creative activities that visualize success.
    • Practice grounding meditations to stay focused.

5. Full Moon: Celebrating and Releasing

The full moon radiates potent energy, perfect for celebrating achievements and releasing what no longer serves you.

  • Rituals:
    • Host a moonlit celebration or solo ritual under the moonlight.
    • Write a list of things to release, then safely burn it.
    • Take a cleansing bath with salts and herbs like lavender.

6. Waning Gibbous: Gratitude and Reflection

As the moon begins to wane, express gratitude for what you’ve manifested.

  • Rituals:
    • Journal about what you’ve learned during this cycle.
    • Perform a self-care ritual to recharge your energy.
    • Use crystals like amethyst or labradorite for introspection.

7. Last Quarter: Releasing and Forgiving

This phase encourages us to let go of lingering attachments.

  • Rituals:
    • Declutter your space to release stagnant energy.
    • Write letters of forgiveness (to yourself or others) and dispose of them ritualistically.
    • Perform shadow work to explore hidden emotions.

8. Waning Crescent: Rest and Renewal

The final phase calls for rest, reflection, and preparation for the next cycle.

  • Rituals:
    • Practice restorative yoga or meditation.
    • Dream journal to capture subconscious insights.
    • Cleanse your altar and tools, preparing for the next new moon.

Essential Tools and Altar Setup for Moon Magic

Creating your lunar altar is a special act. It’s a place where you can dive into the moon’s magical energy. This cozy spot will be the center of your lunar rituals, guiding you on your journey.

Creating Your Lunar Altar

Find a quiet, peaceful spot in your home that feels right to you. It could be a windowsill, a special corner, or a small table. Set up your altar with care, adding things that connect you to the moon’s cycle.

A crescent moon, a crystal, a white candle, and some fragrant herbs make a beautiful and powerful display.

Sacred Tools for Moon Rituals

  • Lunar phase calendar: Keep track of the moon’s cycles to time your lunar rituals accordingly.
  • Ritual chalice or cup: Use this to hold offering liquids like water, tea, or wine during your ceremonies.
  • Incense or smudge stick: Cleanse your sacred space and attune your senses to the moon’s magic.
  • Athame (ritual knife): This symbolic tool can be used to direct energy and cast circle.

Crystals and Herbs for Lunar Work

Use crystals and herbs to add natural energy to your moon magic. Moonstone, quartz, and amethyst are great for lunar rituals. Herbs like lavender, sage, and chamomile can also enhance your practice.

Place these items on your altar to create a beautiful, harmonious display.

Release expectations to intuitively feel the changing energy of the moon and just have fun tapping into this cycle – the moon you release expectations, the more room you allow for your personal patterns to come through and make sense in connection to the moon.
