I am far from a crystal expert, but I have been using crystals in my practice since the beginning. I’ve found that my practice with crystals has mostly been an intuitive one and I work with what I’m drawn to. I know there are true crystal witches out there who understand the specifics of why we might be drawn to certain crystals to heal or work with certain areas, but this post will be from my own experience. As always, feel free to take what resonates and trash what doesn’t.
How to Use Crystals in Your Spiritual Practice
1. Meditation
One of the first things I did when working with crystals is simply holding ones I was drawn to while doing meditation practices. I’d holding crystals or put them in my space to support me while in meditation. I’ve found that crystals help ground me, keep me focused, and also channel energy for me while in meditation.
2. Energy Work
I started my spiritual journey through reiki – so I was really pulled to use crystals that matched the energy centers. While sending reiki to different energy centers I’d be drawn to pull a crystal that I associated to it. An example of this might be placing an amethyst on your third eye chakra can enhance intuition and clarity.
4. Creating Sacred Spaces
I’ve used crystals throughout my home – each area with crystals having a different purpose. I have a blue kyanite piece next to where I give a lot of presentations for work, I have selenite next to my bed, and I generally have a piece of garnet next to where I do my money manifesting work. You can arrange crystals on an altar, desk, or bedside table to invite serve different purposes.
5. Wearing Crystals
This one I do less these days, but I often wore crystal necklaces or shoved crystals in my bra depending on what energy I was calling in and what crystal I was drawn to. When I first was opening up about my spiritual experiences I wore a blue kyanite necklace all the time. When I started doing readings I wore amethyst. Wearing crystal jewelry allows you to carry the crystal’s energy with you throughout the day and help to align with your intentions and needs.
Understanding the Spiritual Significance of Crystal Colors
Colors impact the crystal’s energy and our intentions around it. Here’s some examples of what colors might mean for different crystals:
- Red Crystals: energy, passion, and grounding (ex. Red Jasper, Garnet)
- Orange Crystals: creativity, joy, and sensuality (ex. Carnelian, Orange Calcite)
- Yellow Crystals: confidence, clarity, and willpower (ex. Citrine, Yellow Jasper)
- Green Crystals: healing, abundance, and growth (ex. Green Aventurine, Malachite)
- Blue Crystals: communication, peace, and truth (ex. Lapis Lazuli, Blue Lace Agate)
- Purple Crystals: spirituality, intuition, and transformation (ex. Amethyst, Lepidolite)
- White/Clear Crystals: purity, clarity, and connection to the divine (ex. Clear Quartz, Selenite)
- Black Crystals: protection, grounding, and banishing negativity (ex. Black Tourmaline, Obsidian)
The Spiritual Significance of Crystal Shapes
I personally am often drawn to raw crystals but there’s lots of different shapes crystals come in and are shaped into. The shape of a crystal can influence how its energy is directed and utilized:
- Tumbled Stones: Smooth and polished, these are easy to carry and use in various practices.
- Raw/Natural Crystals: Untouched by human hands, these maintain their natural energy and are great for grounding and raw energy work.
- Points: Direct energy flow. Single points can be used to focus energy in one direction, while double points can direct energy both ways.
- Clusters: Radiate energy outward in all directions and are excellent for cleansing spaces.
- Spheres: Emit energy equally in all directions, promoting harmony and balance.
- Pyramids: Amplify and focus energy, making them powerful for manifestation work.
- Hearts: Represent love and compassion, ideal for emotional healing.
- Wands: Used to direct energy, perfect for healing practices and energy work.
Tips for Starting Your Crystal Practice
- Choose Your Crystals Intuitively: Trust your intuition when selecting crystals. Often, the crystals you are drawn to are the ones you need the most.
- Cleanse Your Crystals: Regularly cleanse your crystals to clear any accumulated negative energy. Methods include smudging with smoke clearing, bathing in moonlight, resting on selenite, or using sound vibrations.
- Set Intentions: Before working with your crystals, set clear intentions for what you wish to achieve. This can help focus the crystal’s energy on your specific goals.
- Learn and Explore: If you feel called, dig into the deeper meaning of each crystal. Check out books, take courses, and connect with experienced crystal witches.
- Stay Open and Patient: Working with crystals is a personal and intuitive journey. Stay open to the experience and be patient with yourself as you learn and grow.
I hope this gave you some ideas on how to get started with adding in crystals for your own practice. Remember, you don’t have to know what each crystal is ‘supposed’ to do (you certainly can though!) in order to work with them – you can intuitively work with what you’re called to and how you’re called to work with the crystal. If it doesn’t work how you wanted, switch up what you did and play with the energy of different crystals.
