A lunar witch’s craft revolves around the moon’s energy, cycles, and phases. To fully embrace lunar magic, it helps to curate a collection of tools that enhance your practice. These tools amplify intentions, deepen your connection to the moon, and provide clarity for spiritual work. Below is a guide to the essential tools every lunar witch may find useful, along with tips for using them effectively.

1. Crystals

Crystals are a cornerstone of lunar witchcraft, with specific stones aligning to the moon’s energy:

  • Moonstone: Enhances intuition, promotes emotional balance, and connects deeply with the moon’s cycles.
  • Selenite: Named after Selene, the moon goddess, this crystal cleanses energy and enhances spiritual clarity.
  • Amethyst: Supports meditation and dreamwork, making it a great companion during full or waning moons.
  • Labradorite: A stone of transformation and protection, ideal for working through shadow work during waning phases.

How to Use:

  • Meditate with crystals under the moonlight.
  • Create a moon altar featuring these stones.
  • Use selenite to cleanse your tools after rituals.

2. Herbs

Herbs are potent allies for a lunar witch, offering versatility for teas, incense, or spellwork:

  • Mugwort: Known for enhancing dreams and intuition, it’s perfect for full moon rituals.
  • Lavender: Calms the mind and spirit, useful for waning moon phases.
  • Rosemary: Offers protection and cleansing, great for new moon ceremonies.
  • Jasmine: Associated with the moon’s energy, it inspires love and psychic connection.

How to Use:

  • Burn herbs as incense during rituals.
  • Add them to a cleansing bath on a full moon.
  • Make herbal teas to support your intentions.

3. Candles

Candles are used to focus energy and set intentions during rituals:

  • White Candles: Represent purity and the moon’s light; ideal for any lunar phase.
  • Silver Candles: Symbolize the moon itself and are powerful for full moon rituals.
  • Black Candles: Excellent for releasing and banishing during the waning moon.

How to Use:

  • Carve intentions into candles before lighting them.
  • Use colored candles that correspond with the moon phase or your desired outcome.
  • Burn a candle during meditation to connect with the moon’s energy.

4. Lunar Journal or Grimoire

A dedicated journal helps you track the moon’s phases, your rituals, and personal insights.

  • What to Include:
    • Moon phase observations and how they affect your emotions.
    • Ritual details, including outcomes and reflections.
    • Dreams and intuitive messages received during specific lunar cycles.

How to Use:

  • Reflect on each phase of the moon and how it influences your goals and emotions.
  • Document your lunar rituals to notice patterns and growth over time.

5. Tarot or Oracle Cards

Tarot and oracle cards are excellent tools for introspection and lunar guidance:

  • Moon-Related Decks: Choose decks with moon imagery or cards emphasizing intuition, such as The Moon card in tarot.
  • Intention Spreads: Use a spread designed for the new or full moon, focusing on themes like release, manifestation, or clarity.

How to Use:

  • Pull a card each night to guide your lunar practice.
  • Create spreads focused on each moon phase, asking questions like, “What should I release?” or “How can I grow?”

6. Altar Tools

An altar dedicated to lunar magic serves as a sacred space for rituals:

  • Decor: Add lunar symbols, silver fabrics, and moon imagery.
  • Offerings: Place crystals, herbs, or water to honor the moon.
  • Tools: Include a chalice, athame, or wand for ritual work.

How to Use:

  • Refresh your altar with each new moon phase.
  • Leave offerings for lunar deities or spirits you work with.

7. Lunar Calendar

A lunar calendar is essential for planning rituals and aligning with the moon’s phases.

  • Physical Calendars: Mark significant phases, such as new moons, full moons, and eclipses.
  • Apps: Use digital tools like The Moon App for reminders and detailed information.

How to Use:

  • Schedule your rituals and spellwork based on the lunar phases.
  • Note astrological events, such as eclipses or moon transits through zodiac signs, for added nuance.

8. Divination Tools

Beyond tarot, other divination tools can help deepen your lunar connection:

  • Pendulums: Use a moonstone pendulum to answer yes-or-no questions.
  • Runes: Cast runes under the moonlight to receive spiritual guidance.

How to Use:

  • Perform divination rituals outdoors during a full moon.
  • Incorporate the moon’s energy into your readings by focusing on lunar questions.

9. Ritual Bath Tools

A ritual bath is a powerful way to cleanse your energy and align with the moon:

  • Bath Salts: Infuse with moon-charged water and essential oils.
  • Essential Oils: Use lavender, jasmine, or frankincense to align with lunar energy.
  • Candles: Place around your tub for ambiance and focus.

How to Use:

  • Bathe during the full moon to cleanse and recharge.
  • Add herbs or crystals for specific intentions.

10. Moon Water

Moon water is created by leaving water under the moonlight to absorb its energy:

  • How to Make:
    • Place a jar of water outside or on a windowsill during a specific moon phase.
    • Label the jar with the date and phase.
  • Uses:
    • Drink it for energy alignment.
    • Use it in spells, to cleanse tools, or as an offering.

By cultivating these tools and integrating them into your daily practice, you can enhance your connection to lunar magic and create a deeply personal and meaningful spiritual path. Let the moon guide you as you explore the rhythms of the universe!

A Step-by-Step Guide to Deepen Your Connection with the Lunar Cycle

Tracking the moon’s cycles is a powerful way to connect with nature and yourself, offering a rhythm that encourages self-awareness, reflection, and growth. A moon journal provides a dedicated space to document the moon’s influence on your life, along with personal insights that can reveal emotional patterns, inspire intentions, and align you with the natural flow of each lunar phase. Follow this guide to start your personalized moon journal, complete with tips on what to track, correspondences for each phase, and prompts to enrich your self-discovery.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Begin with a few essentials to make your moon journaling practice feel special and intentional:

  • Journal or Notebook: Choose one that’s dedicated to tracking the moon. A lined or blank notebook with a calming cover or meaningful imagery can add a touch of inspiration to your ritual.
  • Pens & Markers: Have a variety of colors for different moon phases, moods, or types of notes.
  • Moon Calendar: Use a printed calendar, an app, or draw one yourself to keep track of the dates for each phase.
  • Optional: Stickers, stamps, or drawings that symbolize the phases and make your journal feel personal.

Step 2: Set Up Your Moon Journal’s Layout

How you organize your moon journal is personal, but here’s a simple way to start:

  1. Monthly Overview: Dedicate the first page of each month to jot down the dates of each phase—new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter.
  2. Lunar Cycle Spread: Create a section for each week of the lunar cycle. Label each section with the moon phase and date to guide your entries.
  3. Phase Highlights: Reserve a few pages to explore each phase in detail, with information on its correspondences, elements, and the energies it carries.

Step 3: Track Each Moon Phase with Intention

Recording your thoughts and experiences during each phase helps you connect with the moon’s influence. Here are some prompts and ideas for each phase:

New Moon – Setting Intentions and Planting Seeds

  • Theme: New beginnings, introspection, goal setting.
  • Correspondences: Colors like black or dark blue, crystals like moonstone, and herbs like sage or lavender.
  • Journal Prompts:
    • What do I want to invite into my life this cycle?
    • What are my intentions for the coming weeks?
  • Affirmation: “I am open to new beginnings and fresh opportunities.”

First Quarter – Taking Action and Building Momentum

  • Theme: Action, motivation, overcoming challenges.
  • Correspondences: Colors like red or orange, crystals like carnelian, herbs like rosemary.
  • Journal Prompts:
    • What actions can I take to support my intentions?
    • What obstacles am I facing, and how can I work through them?
  • Affirmation: “I have the courage to take steps toward my dreams.”

Full Moon – Reflecting and Celebrating

  • Theme: Completion, celebration, clarity.
  • Correspondences: Colors like white or silver, crystals like clear quartz, herbs like chamomile or jasmine.
  • Journal Prompts:
    • What have I achieved so far?
    • What emotions are surfacing, and what needs to be released?
  • Affirmation: “I celebrate my journey and release what no longer serves me.”

Last Quarter – Reflecting and Releasing

  • Theme: Reflection, gratitude, letting go.
  • Correspondences: Colors like purple or brown, crystals like smoky quartz, herbs like thyme or cedar.
  • Journal Prompts:
    • What lessons have I learned this cycle?
    • What can I release before the next new moon?
  • Affirmation: “I release old patterns and prepare for renewal.”

Step 4: Document Emotional Insights & Patterns

Each moon phase can stir specific emotions. Note any recurring patterns in your moods, energy levels, or dreams, which can reveal personal insights over time. For example:

  • Mood Tracking: Use words, colors, or symbols to record how you feel during each phase.
  • Dream Journal: Keep a section for dreams, which can often be more vivid during full moons.
  • Physical Energy: Note fluctuations in energy levels, as many feel more energized or restful depending on the moon’s influence.

Step 5: Reflect at the End of Each Lunar Cycle

At the end of each month, take a few minutes to review your entries. Ask yourself:

  • What patterns did I notice?
  • How did each phase align with my intentions and actions?
  • What can I carry forward into the next cycle?

Consider creating a summary page with highlights and insights gained from the month. This practice not only enhances self-awareness but helps you set more aligned intentions for the next new moon.

Step 6: Use Your Moon Journal as a Sacred Space

Make your moon journal a cozy, sacred space. Light a candle, play soothing music, or meditate before you start writing. By making this ritual special, your journal will become a space where you feel deeply connected to yourself and the rhythms of the moon.

Bonus: Ideas to Personalize Your Moon Journal

  1. Create Moon Phase Art: Add sketches, stamps, or stickers of each phase.
  2. Incorporate Tarot or Oracle Cards: Draw a card during each phase and note its guidance.
  3. Add Quotes or Poems: Find or write quotes that resonate with each phase’s theme.

Final Thoughts

Your moon journal is a deeply personal tool, designed to bring awareness, guidance, and introspection into your life. By dedicating time to track each phase, you’ll create a rhythm of self-reflection that aligns with the moon’s cycles, allowing for more intentional and meaningful growth.

  1. Track Your Intentions: Use the calendar to note what you’re manifesting during each New Moon. Revisit these intentions during the Full Moon to see how they’ve evolved.
  2. Plan Your Rituals: Mark key dates to schedule moon-specific rituals, like cleansing crystals during the Full Moon or journaling under the Waning Crescent.
  3. Create a Moon Journal: Pair the calendar with a notebook to document how each moon phase influences your energy, mood, and experiences. Over time, you’ll uncover patterns and insights.
  4. Set Monthly Themes: Let each moon inspire a focus for the month. For example, during a Capricorn Full Moon, explore themes of ambition and discipline.
  5. Incorporate Astrology: Write down the zodiac sign for each Full Moon on your calendar. Use this to plan activities that align with the energy of that sign.
  6. Family or Community Bonding: Share the calendar with friends or family and encourage everyone to try a Full Moon ritual together—it’s a great way to deepen connections.

Your calendar is more than a guide; it’s an invitation to build a deeper relationship with the moon and its transformative energy.

The moon is the ruler of our emotional and spiritual realm. Its phases influence not just the tides but also our energies and emotions. One of the most powerful phases is the waxing moon, a time when the moon is growing from new to full. This period is imbued with a unique energy that can be harnessed for personal growth, manifestation, and transformation. In this blog post, we’ll explore the spiritual associations of the waxing moon and suggest some rituals you can perform to align with its potent energy.

The Energy of the Waxing Moon:

This is the second major phase of the moon cycle. After the darkness of the new moon, we start to see the moon slowly grow in the sky. With the increasing light we also might feel an increase in energy and creativity. Here are some correspondences with the Waxing Moon:

  • generational correspondence: maiden energy
  • cycle correspondence: follicular
  • tarot correspondence: The High Priestess, The Magician, Wheel of Fortune

  3. Action and Initiative: With the moon gaining strength, it’s a signal for us to take action and be proactive in pursuing our goals.
  4. Positivity and Optimism: This phase carries a positive and optimistic energy, making it easier to focus on positive outcomes and maintain a hopeful outlook.

Rituals for the Waxing Moon

Starting about 7 days after the new moon and throughout the next week until the Full Moon use this list to work with the increasing energy of the moon.

  2. Do the ‘hard’ tasks during the waxing moon
  3. Take action
  4. Tap into your creativity
  5. Call in more of what you want (ex. call in abundance, energy, creativity)
  6. Start a new adventure
  7. Ask yourself what the next version of you would do?
  8. Call in support
  9. Call in healing

The new moon is a powerful moment in the lunar cycle. It marks the beginning of a fresh cycle, and it’s always in the same sign as the current astrological season. The new moon provides us an opportunity to align ourselves with the energy of the universe, set intentions, reflect on our journey, and take some time to rest. In this post, we’ll walk through how to do a New Moon Life Check-In to help you attune yourself to the new moon and the upcoming lunar cycle.

If you’d like to go even deeper learning about how to align your life with the moon, check out our Moon Magic 101 workbook on Etsy.

The Energy of the New Moon:

The beginning of the moon cycle. The new moon signifies fresh starts and a time to rest and plan. To give you some references of how you can view the energy of the new moon, here are a few examples:

  • seasonal correspondence: winter energy
  • generational correspondence: crone energy
  • cycle correspondence: period energy
  • tarot correspondence: the fool
  • associated activities and feelings:
    • creating wishes and intentions for the new cycle
    • self-care and filling your own cup
    • rest and dream
    • new beginnings
    • initiation
    • planting seeds
    • realizing your potential
  • manifestation themes: big ideas and dreams

Timing of the New Moon:

The new moon technically only occurs during a moment during the lunar cycle, but we can tap into the energy of the new moon in several different ways:

  1. Only on the day of the new moon
  2. A day or so before AND after the actual new moon
  3. Begin with the new moon and use the energy of the new moon for ~7 days. <This is the way I think is best when you’re starting to track the moon and work with the lunar cycle.
  4. ~3.5 days before the new moon and ~3.5 days after the new moon. <This might be a little more aligned to how the energy naturally lines up for you, but takes a little more effort to track and could make tracking confusing at first.

In this post I’m going to use the 3rd way to track since I find it is easiest to follow and also gives you time to really dig into the new moon’s energy without feeling rushed.

New Moon Reset Checklist:

Starting on the day of the new moon and throughout the next 7 days use this list to really work with the moon.

1. Wrap up projects from the previous lunar cycle

Is there something you were sooooo close on finishing during the Last Quarter Moon week and it’s still clogging up your brain space? If there’s anything you want to complete, use the first day or so during the week of the New Moon to complete it so that you feel like you can focus on what’s coming next. This could be things like house projects you need to wrap up, grocery shopping, work emails that you’re stressed out. Get it wrapped up and out of your mental space. (And if it’s something that will need longer than a day or so to do and you know you want to continue with it, let’s pause it for a minute and include it in our plan for this new lunar cycle).

2. Refill your cup

Carve out time to do something to refill your cup (for me, that’s starting the cycle fresh with a clean house and going through my finances; for you it might be giving yourself permission to take a nap, reading a book during the day, catching up on a netflix night, etc.).

3. Start Dreaming

Allow yourself to dream about the next month. What do you want to do? What is calling to you right now? What goals do you want to continue to walk towards? Hop on pinterest or watch a dreamy youtube video to get inspired. Sit in a quiet room with your tarot/oracle cards and do a few pulls to see what comes up for inspiration. Hang out in your heart space and see where you’re led.

4. Be open to receive inspiration

Open yourself up to be inspired and led. You might not get a bolt of lightning of inspiration right at the beginning of the lunar cycle, but don’t be discouraged. You probably know at least the next best step for you, so go with that and open yourself to be led to the step after that. You’ll be surprised how much comes up for you if you just open yourself up to receive.

5. Tune into the energy of this cycle

Look for clues about this next cycle by checking out which astrological season we’re in (hint: the new moon will be in the same sign as the current zodiac season). You can also check out which house that sign is in in your chart. So if Aries is your first house in your natal/birth chart, then when the new moon is in cancer would be in your 4th house. You can use themes from that house to understand what things might come up for you this month.

6. Set intentions

Now that you have some ideas of what this lunar cycle will look like, spend a little time creating 1-2 intentions that you think you can work on this month. If you have a bigger goal, how can you break it down into something smaller that you can really focus on creating this month? If you want to call in 100k, can you focus on calling in an amount that feels exciting and manageable to you? Can you set up a system that might help you call that money in?

7. Write down some goals for each week of the lunar cycle

Write out some ideas based on the phase of the moon for each week and what you can do to move towards bringing those intentions into reality. These don’t have to be crazy detailed or difficult to achieve, but if you have an idea of how you can use each week’s energy for the cycle it can help you determine what things might be best to do. If you need help figuring out the energy of each week check out this Moon Magic post for more help.

Now that you have your action plan and you have dug into the energy of this lunar cycle, now it’s the time to go out and actually do it in the next three weeks. As you go through the lunar cycle, remember to check in with yourself regularly and adjust your plans as needed. You’re going to great and remember, if this cycle didn’t work out how you expected, you’ll get another chance to practice more every 28 days. You can also hop into the cycle no matter where we are in it, so don’t be discouraged if you missed the new moon week, you can always jump in and get to work during the first quarter, or celebrate yourself during the full moon, or reflect during the last quarter moon.

If you’re working with the moon or have ever followed the moon you probably know at least two phases: the New Moon and the Full Moon. If you’ve been working with it for a while you might have even attuned to all eight phases: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter Moon, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter Moon, and Waning Crescent. And you might’ve connect with the names of each full moon – but did you know there’s a few more types of moons? Here’s a list of the moons you might not have started working with yet. If these don’t resonate with you or your lunar practices, don’t worry about it – but these special events might be something that you want to keep in your back pocket for a little extra boost when working with the moon.

If you want to start tracking the daily moon, check out this Free Printable Calendar of ALL the moons, astrological seasons, and sabbats for 2024: Check it out here

Blue Moon

There are two definitions of a Blue Moon.

  • A full moon occurring twice in one calendar month (ex. Two full moons in August)
  • A second full moon happening in the same sign as the previous full moon’s sign (ex. A full moon in Capricorn is followed by another full moon in Capricorn)

The second definition is much more rare and a lot more potent. When this happens (and it is happening in 2024!) we can use this time to amplify our magic created during the first full moon. Use the second full moon to double down on the gratitude, celebration, and surrendering practices you did during the first full moon. Use this time as an opportunity to connect deeper with the sign the moon is in – after all, the universe is giving us an opportunity to really connect with this archetype so let’s use the lesson while it’s here.

When there’s a second full moon in a calendar month, but it’s not in the same sign – not to worry. It’s still an exciting time to send gratitude for being able to work with two full moons in one month, but the spiritual impact of it won’t be as strong as a true blue moon.

Black Moon

The Black Moon is the opposite of a Blue Moon because instead of an extra full moon in one month, we’ll have an extra new moon.

And like the Blue Moon there are two definitions: two new moons in one calendar month or two back to back new moons in the same astrological sign.

When the new moons are in the same sign this is an opportunity to really double down on our original intentions from the first new moon. Keep going with what you started and take it further than you’d normally have the chance to under a typical moon cycle.

Eclipses

Eclipses, both Lunar and Solar, happen multiple times as year and will happen in the opposite sign. So if we have a lunar eclipse in Scorpio, about 6 months later we’d have a solar eclipse in Scorpio as well.

Lunar Eclipse Moon:

Lunar eclipses occur when Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface. A lunar eclipse happens during a full moon and it can be used as a a way to supercharge the magic of the full moon. Some people might not like to work with eclipse energy but I’ve always found eclipse energy is one of my favorite times to connect with the moon and do special rituals. Follow your own intuition on whether you’d like to just be aware of the eclipse or if you’d like to actively work with the energy of the lunar eclipse.

Solar Eclipse Moon

As the opposite of a lunar eclipse, a solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light. A solar eclipse happens during a new moon and this is a time where we’re asked to reset in a big way to make way for fast moving changes. Like with the lunar eclipse, some people might not want to work with the eclipse energy, but again, I find this time to be extra powerful and as an easy way to tap into the portal of transformation available to us.

Dark Moon

The Dark Moon occurs when the moon is in the astrological sign just before the moon moves into the sign the New Moon will be in. So if the New Moon is going to be in Scorpio, the Dark Moon happens while the moon is in Libra the day(s) before it moves to Scorpio. This is a time to pause and acknowledge the cycle has ended. The New Moon marks the beginning, the Dark Moon marks the end. I find this time is best for really slowing down in your daily life as much as possible. I don’t work on rituals or spells during this time, it’s truly a time for stillness.

Void of Course

This is the period where the moon moves into the next sign and the Moon is not quite in the next sign. I don’t personally work with tracking void of course moons, instead I just take the moon by which sign it’ll be in for the majority of the day. If you do want to track down to this level, Void of Course is a time of waiting to take big actions or casting spells. It’s more about rest and self care. Take a break.

I hope this helped in your journey with moon magic! I would say these are more advanced concepts and if working with these types of moons feels overwhelming to you, I’d suggest you pop over to the Moon Magic 101 post and get started with the basics (there’s nothing wrong with basics, in fact, I think there’s more magic available when we make things simple because we’re more likely to keep up with it).

What is a Lunar Witch?

First of all, as with everything in spirituality, definitions will vary between each person, so my definition of a lunar witch might be different than what someone else says. I would call anyone who is drawn to cycles, especially the cycle of the moon, a lunar witch. A lunar witch is someone who finds comfort in the cyclical nature of our lives – whether it’s the lunar phase, seasons, wheel of the year, generational cycles (maiden, mother, crone, soul). A lunar witch, with a little practice, can likely guess where the moon is within its phase and astrological sign just by how they’re feeling that day. A lunar witch is someone who embraces the ebbs and flows of nature and understands that everything is always shifting and changing and uses that wisdom to anchor themselves with the shifting tides.

If you’re not sure if you’re a Lunar Witch or not (or if you have the capacity to become one) here are a few signs that the path of the Lunar Witch is calling you:

  1. You’re pulled to the path of a Lunar Witch
  2. You’re ready to embrace the ebbs and flows of life
  3. You’re pulled to selenite
  4. You’ve started noticing patterns in your life that are tied to the moon
  5. The predictable cyclical nature of life is a draw to you
  6. You like to make order out of chaos
  7. You spend a lot of time near or with water

Rituals of a Lunar Witch

Here are some examples of rituals a lunar witch might do on a daily basis. Some of these will take some intentional practice to really ground into the ritual.

  1. Track the moon phase AND which sign it’s in
  2. Before bed reflect (or journal) what emotions you felt and what themes came up today. What connections are there between the phase and the zodiac sign the moon was in that day?
  3. Change how you approach manifesting depending on which phase the moon is in
  4. Connect with water each day
  5. Release shame of shifting emotions
  6. Connect with other cycles – like the daily cycles, weekly cycles, wheel of the year, seasonal cycles, and generational cycles
  7. Attune to your menstrual cycle (if you have one): Notice the differences or similarities between your cycle and the moon.
  8. Connect with your selenite crystals
  9. Craft personal rituals based on the phase of the moon
  10. Create content based on the phase of the moon

How to become a Lunar Witch

If you want to become practicing Lunar Witch here’s what I did:

  1. I downloaded a moon tracking app (Full Moon is the free app I’ve used). If you want a hardcopy of all the moons of 2024, grab it here: Moons of 2024. It’ll have all of the signs the moon moves through each day as well as the four major phases of the moon.
  2. Each day when you wake up, check the app and see which phase the moon is in (New Moon, Waxing Moon, First Quarter Moon, Full Moon, Last Quarter Moon, Waning Moon) and which sign the moon is in (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces). Make note of it mentally.
  3. Throughout the day, notice your feelings and what has been coming up during the day. Maybe you’ve been feeling extra emotional, you have more energy than normal, your sibling called you out of nowhere.
  4. At the end of the day journal what came up for you and note the moon phase and sign.
  5. Repeat this process for a few lunar cycles
  6. Eventually, you’ll start to notice a pattern in your energy levels and themes that come up for you. You might notice you are always tired during the new moon and wired during the full moon. Or that you somehow exercise when the moon is in Aries and pull cards when its in Scorpio

Understanding the Moon’s Phases

Each phase of the moon offers unique energy that influences our emotions, intuition, and actions. Here’s how to align with the moon:

1. New Moon: Setting Intentions

The new moon is a time for planting seeds of intention. It’s a fresh start where you can visualize your dreams and set clear goals.

  • Rituals:
    • Write your intentions in your journal or grimoire.
    • Light a black or white candle to signify a clean slate.
    • Meditate on what you want to call into your life.

2. Waxing Crescent: Building Momentum

As the moon begins to grow, so does the energy for action and progress.

  • Rituals:
    • Create a vision board that reflects your intentions.
    • Take small, actionable steps toward your goals.
    • Perform a gratitude ritual to thank the universe for future blessings.

3. First Quarter: Taking Action

The first quarter moon challenges us to overcome obstacles and make decisive moves.

  • Rituals:
    • Write down one fear or challenge and burn it safely to symbolize release.
    • Focus on physical activity to channel courage and momentum.
    • Perform a manifestation spell with herbs like basil or cinnamon.

4. Waxing Gibbous: Refining Goals

With the moon nearly full, it’s time to refine your intentions and prepare for manifestation.

  • Rituals:
    • Review and adjust your goals based on progress so far.
    • Engage in creative activities that visualize success.
    • Practice grounding meditations to stay focused.

5. Full Moon: Celebrating and Releasing

The full moon radiates potent energy, perfect for celebrating achievements and releasing what no longer serves you.

  • Rituals:
    • Host a moonlit celebration or solo ritual under the moonlight.
    • Write a list of things to release, then safely burn it.
    • Take a cleansing bath with salts and herbs like lavender.

6. Waning Gibbous: Gratitude and Reflection

As the moon begins to wane, express gratitude for what you’ve manifested.

  • Rituals:
    • Journal about what you’ve learned during this cycle.
    • Perform a self-care ritual to recharge your energy.
    • Use crystals like amethyst or labradorite for introspection.

7. Last Quarter: Releasing and Forgiving

This phase encourages us to let go of lingering attachments.

  • Rituals:
    • Declutter your space to release stagnant energy.
    • Write letters of forgiveness (to yourself or others) and dispose of them ritualistically.
    • Perform shadow work to explore hidden emotions.

8. Waning Crescent: Rest and Renewal

The final phase calls for rest, reflection, and preparation for the next cycle.

  • Rituals:
    • Practice restorative yoga or meditation.
    • Dream journal to capture subconscious insights.
    • Cleanse your altar and tools, preparing for the next new moon.

Essential Tools and Altar Setup for Moon Magic

Creating your lunar altar is a special act. It’s a place where you can dive into the moon’s magical energy. This cozy spot will be the center of your lunar rituals, guiding you on your journey.

Creating Your Lunar Altar

Find a quiet, peaceful spot in your home that feels right to you. It could be a windowsill, a special corner, or a small table. Set up your altar with care, adding things that connect you to the moon’s cycle.

A crescent moon, a crystal, a white candle, and some fragrant herbs make a beautiful and powerful display.

Sacred Tools for Moon Rituals

  • Lunar phase calendar: Keep track of the moon’s cycles to time your lunar rituals accordingly.
  • Ritual chalice or cup: Use this to hold offering liquids like water, tea, or wine during your ceremonies.
  • Incense or smudge stick: Cleanse your sacred space and attune your senses to the moon’s magic.
  • Athame (ritual knife): This symbolic tool can be used to direct energy and cast circle.

Crystals and Herbs for Lunar Work

Use crystals and herbs to add natural energy to your moon magic. Moonstone, quartz, and amethyst are great for lunar rituals. Herbs like lavender, sage, and chamomile can also enhance your practice.

Place these items on your altar to create a beautiful, harmonious display.

Release expectations to intuitively feel the changing energy of the moon and just have fun tapping into this cycle – the moon you release expectations, the more room you allow for your personal patterns to come through and make sense in connection to the moon.

Every phase has an energy that you can align with to make you life EASIER. Then you add in the energy of the zodiac sign the moon is that day, and you get to create magic with ease. The moon literally gives us a framework to design our life around if we only take advantage of it by attuning ourselves to its energy.

What is Moon Magic?

Before we delve into the practical aspects of moon magic, let’s start by understanding what moon magic is all about. Moon magic is the practice of harnessing the energies of the moon to manifest your intentions, amplify your spells, and connect with the rhythms of the universe. The moon is a symbol of feminine energy, intuition, and the ebb and flow of life’s cycles. It has a profound impact on our emotions, moods, and the natural world around us.

What does using moon magic look like? It looks like planning your life around the phases of the moon so you don’t feel guilt when you’re in a lower energy phase. It looks like launching your business with more ease. Or keeping up with house chores in a way that feels easy and natural. Manifesting is soooo much easier when you follow the lunar cycle.

The two pieces of the Moon Magic formula:

There are two parts to moon magic: the moon phases and the zodiac the moon is in.

I want you to think about the phases as the framework of how to structure your life and think of the zodiac as the unique energy of the day.

Here’s the rough framework you’ll use each and every lunar cycle:

  • New Moon: Create intentions and a goal
  • Waxing Moon: Take action on that goal
  • Full Moon: Celebrate yourself and adjust how you’re approaching your goal
  • Waning Moon: Complete goal and reflect on what went well.

Once you have the framework provided by the lunar cycle’s phases, you’ll add in the flavor provided by which zodiac sign the moon is in each day.

How to Attune Yourself to Moon Phases and Their Energy:

Ok, you want to attune yourself to the moon, how do you get started:

  • Track the moon and what zodiac sign it’s in each day. There’s lots of free apps for this OR a simple google search will tell you where the moon is each day. If you want to track the major moon phases check out this post: Moons of 2024
  • Start a journal tracking your emotions and what you did that day along with the phase + sign the moon is in
  • Track for at least two full lunar cycles (new moon to new moon; full moon to full moon; etc.) and start noticing patterns in your emotions

So track, track, track. Follow the basic formula with the moon phases. Then once you’re comfortable with the framework, add in the energy of the daily zodiac.

But what do each of the phases and signs mean…keep reading.

Embodying the magic of the moon

Now that you understand the unique energy the moon has each day (phase + zodiac sign) you’ll use that information to align yourself to the energy of the moon each day. This is where it gets to be like an experiment. As you track the lunar cycle you’ll start noticing how your energy ebbs and flows on average. You might find yourself decreasing in energy as the moon wanes and increasing as the moon waxes. From there you get to structure your life in a way that plugs into the moon’s magic and create your dream life with so much more ease than if you were constantly trying to be high energy and push, push, push. The moon gives you everything you need to be successful as long as you tap into it.
