As witches, we align ourselves with nature’s rhythms, harness energy, and tap into the sacred within and around us. Keeping lists is a practical and magical way to organize this journey, deepen our understanding, and create a meaningful, personalized practice. From tracking moon phases to recording spells, herbal correspondences, and daily intentions, lists help us capture insights, refine our skills, and honor the cycles we celebrate.

A bullet journal is a powerful and customizable tool for organization, creativity, and self-discovery. For witches, it can become a sacred space for tracking spiritual practices, exploring magical correspondences, and documenting your journey. Whether you’re an experienced witch or just starting out, a witchy bullet journal is a fantastic way to blend your practice with daily life.

Here’s everything you need to know about creating a witch bullet journal!

What Is a Bullet Journal?

A bullet journal (or “BuJo”) is a flexible, self-designed planner and notebook system created by Ryder Carroll. Instead of relying on pre-made planners, you build layouts (called spreads) to suit your needs.

For witches, this can include space for mundane tasks like meal planning alongside magical elements like moon phase tracking, tarot pulls, and spell planning.

Payoff: A bullet journal helps you stay organized while channeling your creative energy into a personal, magical grimoire tailored to your needs.

How to Start Your Witch Bullet Journal

  1. Choose Your Journal
    • Notebook: Look for one with dotted or grid pages. Popular choices include Leuchtturm1917, Archer & Olive, or Moleskine.
    • Magical Aesthetic: Consider colors or designs that resonate with your practice, like a black cover with silver foiling or moon-themed designs.
    • My actual journals:
      • Gilded Rosettes Journal – I love the look and feel of this journal, it feels magical and use for this special occasions
      • My Daily Journal – I have about a million of these journals laying around that I use for so many things. I love the size of this journal and I do like having a little strap so I can stuff things into it without my papers falling out.
      • My Big Journal – This is the journal I use when I know I want to create bigger spreads or capture a lot of information. It’s a little bigger than I like for daily journaling, but I appreciate the extra size (I keep my wheel of the year and full moon calendars specifically in here so they don’t have to spread across multiple pages). I also use this for any online course I take.
  2. Gather Your Supplies
    • Pens and markers in magical colors (black, gold, silver, etc.).
      • My actual pens and markers:
        • Gel Pens – I do love these pens, there’s a ton of color options and they make my inner child (3rd grade specifically) very happy.
        • Colorful Highlighters – These are bright and easy to use, I typically use them for my headers or just to decorate
        • Desk Organizer – This is where I stuff all of my pens and markers and I like that it spins just for fun 🙂
    • Stickers, washi tape, and stencils for decorative elements.
    • A ruler for clean lines in spreads.
  3. Set Your Intentions
    • Write a short blessing or intention on the first page to dedicate your bullet journal to your spiritual practice.
  4. Learn Basic BuJo Symbols
The bullet journal method uses symbols to keep things simple. For example:
    • Task: A dot (•) for things to do.
    • Event: A circle (○) for magical or mundane events.
    • Note: A dash (–) for ideas or notes.
Modify these symbols with a witchy twist if you’d like!

How to Structure Your Witch Bullet Journal

Bullet journals are built on modules like these:

  1. Index
    • The first few pages should be your index, where you’ll track your layouts and their page numbers.
  2. Future Log
    • Use this section to mark upcoming moon phases, Sabbats, retrogrades, or magical goals for the year.
  3. Monthly Log
    • Combine mundane and magical plans, such as appointments, spell timings, or rituals.
  4. Daily Log
    • A space for to-dos, reminders, and reflections. Add space to document magical insights or mini tarot readings.
  5. Collections
    • These are thematic spreads (like “Crystal Correspondences” or “Tarot Pulls”) that enhance your magical practice.

Witchy Bullet Journal Page Ideas

Here are some inspiring page ideas to include in your witch bullet journal:

Daily and Monthly Pages

  • Daily Tarot Pulls: Record your card, its meaning, and your interpretation.
  • Lunar Calendar: Track the moon phases and how they affect your energy.
  • Astrology Forecasts: Note the planetary transits and their impact.
  • Daily Gratitude Log: Add a magical twist by noting blessings or manifestations.

Spiritual Tracking Pages

  • Spell Tracker: Log your spells, their components, and results.
  • Meditation Log: Record your sessions, insights, or mantras.
  • Divination Records: Keep notes on your tarot, pendulum, or rune readings.

Reference Pages

  • Crystal Correspondences: List crystals and their properties.
  • Herb Index: Document magical uses and meanings of herbs you work with.
  • Moon Magic: Include correspondences for each moon phase.
  • Deity Offerings: Create a page for offerings and devotions.

Sabbat and Seasonal Pages

  • Wheel of the Year Tracker: Map out Sabbat dates, rituals, and themes.
  • Seasonal Altar Layouts: Sketch ideas for your altar.
  • Magical Recipes: Record seasonal potions or meals.

Creative Pages

  • Sigil Magic: Practice sigil creation and document their purposes.
  • Witchy Doodles: Fill pages with mystical symbols or doodles.
  • Vision Board: Create a manifestation spread using collaged images.

Tips for Maintaining Your Witch Bullet Journal

  • Start Simple: You don’t need to create elaborate spreads right away. Begin with a few key pages and expand over time.
  • Stay Consistent: Update your journal daily or weekly to keep it relevant.
  • Incorporate Magic: Bless your journal during a full moon or cleanse it with smoke.
  • Experiment: Feel free to adapt layouts to fit your practice better.

Why Create a Witch Bullet Journal?

By combining magical and mundane life into one system, you’ll:

  • Stay organized and focused on your spiritual goals.
  • Deepen your understanding of your practice through consistent tracking.
  • Enjoy a creative outlet that reflects your personal magic.

With a witch bullet journal, the possibilities are endless. Whether you’re jotting down a tarot spread, organizing an upcoming ritual, or simply reflecting on your magical journey, your BuJo becomes an extension of your practice. Ready to start? Light a candle, grab your supplies, and let your creativity flow!

If you’ve been drawn to start a tarot practice but aren’t sure where to begin, you’re not alone. Tarot has been an incredible tool for self-reflection, personal growth, and spiritual practice for me and getting started can be easier than you might think. Let’s talk through finding the right deck, building a tarot routine, and exploring a few simple spreads that can help you gain insights and confidence as you start your tarot journey.

Choosing a Beginner-Friendly Tarot Deck

Finding a deck that feels right is the first step to building a meaningful tarot practice. Here are a few decks that are particularly welcoming to beginners:

  • Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) Tarot: This classic deck is highly recommended for beginners because it features straightforward, symbolic artwork that corresponds well with most tarot guides and resources. Many of the traditional interpretations reference this deck, making it easier to learn.
  • The Modern Witch Tarot: A vibrant, inclusive take on the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, this deck has a modern flair with relatable imagery. Its illustrations are designed with today’s world in mind, making it easy to connect with the meanings.
  • The Good Tarot: This is a unique deck perfect for beginners. If you are worried about ‘bad’ readings or interpretations, this deck focuses on uplifting and empowering messages. Each card is designed to encourage personal growth and positive reflection rather than traditional fortune-telling. The art is ethereal and dream-like, drawing on mystical imagery and rich symbolism that resonates with themes of healing and transformation. This is my go-to deck when I know I want a gentler reading.

Remember, the right deck for you is one that you feel drawn to. It’s okay to start with any deck that speaks to you, as your connection with your cards is often more important than their imagery or symbolism. And, if tarot does not call to you, using oracle decks is just as powerful. My first deck was Work Your Light by Rebecca Campbell and I still love to use that deck today.

How to Begin a Tarot Practice

Starting a tarot practice doesn’t require strict rituals or hours of study. Here are some simple steps to get you started:

  • Set an Intention: Approach each card pull with an open mind and a specific focus. Your intention could be to find guidance on a particular question, seek self-reflection, or even just practice understanding the cards. Grounding yourself with an intention will help create a meaningful reading experience.
  • Cleanse Your Deck: When you first get your deck, it’s a good idea to cleanse it to remove any residual energy and to have it ground into your unique energy. You can do this by passing it through incense smoke, leaving it under the moonlight, or tapping each card lightly. I also like to go through each card when I get a new deck to make sure my essence is entangled in each card.
  • Draw a Card Daily: A daily card draw is one of the best ways to get comfortable with tarot. Each morning or evening, pull a single card and reflect on its meaning. Journaling your daily cards will help you learn the meanings and notice patterns in your life. This doesn’t have to be a long ritual, it can be a quick draw and reflection. I like to keep it to 5 minutes or less so that I am more willing to do it daily.
  • Take Notes: Keep a tarot journal to track your card pulls, observations, and evolving interpretations. Reflecting on past readings is an excellent way to deepen your understanding of the cards and your intuition.
  • Experiment and Trust Your Intuition: While it’s helpful to start with traditional meanings, let yourself notice what personal thoughts or feelings each card brings up. Tarot is a highly intuitive practice, and connecting personally with the cards often brings the most insight. I’ve found that sometimes the traditional card meanings do not resonate with what my intuition is saying – go with your intuition and use the definitions as a guide, but not a rule.

5 Easy Beginner Tarot Spreads

Once you’re comfortable with daily card pulls, try out some simple spreads designed for beginners. These spreads offer just enough guidance without being too overwhelming.

The One-Card Spread

  • Great for: Daily reflection, answering a specific question, or gaining general guidance.
  • How to do it: Shuffle your deck while focusing on a question, then draw one card and interpret it as your answer.

Tips for Staying Consistent with Your Tarot Practice

  1. Make it Part of Your Routine: Find a time in your day, even if it’s just five minutes, to connect with your cards.
  2. Keep a Tarot Journal: This is an invaluable tool for learning. Jot down card meanings, your personal reflections, and any insights that emerge.
  3. Be Kind to Yourself: Tarot is a skill that grows over time. You don’t need to memorize all the cards right away or even have “accurate” readings. Trust the process.

Building a tarot practice is a deeply personal and spiritual experience. Whether you’re pulling a single card in the morning or diving into a detailed spread, each reading is a chance to learn, reflect, and grow.

Essential Tools and Materials for Your Magical Journal

Making a magical journal is key for any witch. You need the right notebook, writing tools, and decorations. These choices make your journal special and meaningful.

The Notebook

Start with a good notebook. Look for one with thick, durable pages. A hardcover keeps your writings safe and allows your journal to grow.

Writing Instruments

Choose pens, pencils, or calligraphy tools that fit your style. Wooden pencils or fountain pens with refillable ink are great. They add a timeless feel to your journal.

Decorative Elements

  • Dried flowers, leaves, or herbs for a natural look
  • Crystals, charms, or symbols to add energy
  • Washi tape, stickers, or stamps for fun and personal touches

Choosing the right tools and materials makes your magical journal special. It becomes a sacred space for your spiritual journey. Enjoy making your own grimoire and let it be your witchcraft companion.

Creating Your Book of Shadows and Spiritual Journals: Foundation Steps

Making a Book of Shadows is a special step for witches. It’s a place for your spiritual finds, spells, and growth. Start by making your journal special with rituals, a sacred writing area, and protection.

Consecrating Your Journal

First, consecrate your journal. This act fills your space with purpose and connects you to your magic. Use items like sage, crystals, or moon water to purify and bless it. This adds your energy to the journal.

Setting Sacred Space

Find a quiet, peaceful place for your Book of Shadows. Make it welcoming for your magical work. Add symbols, candles, or altars that mean something to you. This creates a special area for your journal and rituals.

Protection Rituals for Your Writings

  • Cast a protective circle around your writing space to shield your journal from unwanted energies.
  • Inscribe runes, sigils, or other symbolic markers on the cover or pages of your journal to guard your words.
  • Perform a cleansing ritual with sage, salt, or other purifying elements to maintain the sanctity of your Book of Shadows.

By consecrating your journal, setting up a sacred space, and using protection rituals, you lay a solid base for your magic. Your Book of Shadows will be a treasured friend, showing your growth and spiritual journey.

Here’s 15 ideas for journals you can keep if you’re looking for deepening your witchy life:

1. Seasonal Tracker:

Use a seasonal journal to track and record the things you are naturally drawn to doing (or feeling). Keeping this tracker will help you align yourself to your own natural cycles throughout the year. I’m not sure about you, but it’s become very clear what works for me during each season and what doesn’t work for me. I am very productive and have lots of ideas during spring, but omg, I am drawn to not working on projects that take mental capacity during the summer. In the summer all I want to do is use up my physical energy. And on and on, by tracking this year after year you’ll be able to plan what feels natural to you. I won’t plan for a big project in the summer…but I absolutely would in the fall when I’m going inward and want to use up my mental capacity.

2. Moon Journal:

Like the seasonal tracker, tracking the monthly moon cycle will help you align to those shorter natural cycles. Keeping a journal can help you attune to those changing energies.

As a witch, linking your journaling to the lunar cycle can enrich your magical journey. Each moon phase brings unique energies. These can make your spiritual journal entries more meaningful and boost your witchcraft practice.

  • New Moon Writing Rituals
    • The new moon is a time for fresh starts, self-reflection, and setting intentions. Start your magical journal starters by thinking about your goals and personal growth. Light a candle, create a sacred space, and write from the heart.
  • Full Moon Reflections
    • Use this time for witch’s writing exercises to release and celebrate your achievements. Reflect on how the moon has impacted your life and magic.
  • Waxing and Waning Energy Records
    • The moon’s cycles mirror the changes within us. Record your spiritual journal notes as the moon waxes and wanes. Note how your energy and focus change. This helps plan your rituals and self-care.

3. Astrology Journal:

I feel like there’s always new information coming at me about astrology. I think it’s really fun to learn about astrology, but I cannot mentally hold all of the information and be able to recall in. By keeping an astrology journal, you can hold onto the pieces of information that are coming at you in one place…and bonus points for keeping your natal chart in your astrology journal for easy reference.

4. Ritual and Spell Journal:

A ritual journal is a place where you can jot down what you do while working your own personal magic. Use this for new moon and full moon rituals, how you feel on Sundays, when you naturally feel like cleaning, how you do monthly resets, how you break up your years, what you like doing on rainy days, how you connect in with your spirit team.

Spell RecordIntentComponentsOutcome
Protection SpellCreate a shield of energy around my homeQuartz crystal, frankincense, palo santoFelt a strong sense of security and calm in my living space
Abundance RitualManifest financial stability and prosperityGreen candle, dried basil, coinsReceived an unexpected raise at work within a month
Healing SpellSupport the recovery of a loved oneRose quartz, lavender, chamomileWitnessed significant improvement in their condition over time

Tracking your spell work and ritual outcomes in your magical journal starters is powerful. It’s a tool for self-reflection and growth. This practice honors your work and helps you navigate your witchcraft path with clarity and effectiveness.

5. Dream Log:

Messages find us while we’re sleeping and if you’ve ever kept a dream log before, you’ve probably noticed the more you log, the more you remember, and the more you remember, the more you can find those messages and truths that have come out while you’re dreaming.

our subconscious. This way, you can understand your spiritual practice better. Magical dream journaling helps you record and use the symbols and messages from your dreams, making your witchcraft stronger.

Dream journaling adds a special tool to your spiritual journey. It lets you see how your conscious and unconscious minds connect. You can find hidden truths and guidance that help with your spells, rituals, and witchcraft.

Harnessing the Power of Dream Symbolism

Dreams are full of symbols and archetypes that mean a lot for your spiritual growth. By writing down and analyzing your dreams, you can find important symbols and messages. These can help you understand your subconscious, intuition, and the forces working in your life.

Cultivating Dreamwork Rituals

  • Make your sleep space peaceful and have a bedtime routine to help you dream better.
  • Keep a dream journal and pen next to your bed to write down your dreams right away.
  • Try meditation or visualization to remember your dreams and understand their symbols.
  • Use dream symbols in your witchcraft journal and spells to guide your magic.

By adding dream journaling to your spiritual practice, you open up a source of mystical insight and creativity. Let your dreams guide you to a deeper understanding of yourself and the world.

6. Meditation Journal:

If you’re like me, I bet a lot of things come up during your meditations, use a meditation journal to log when/how you meditate and any guidance that came through during your meditation.

7. Spirit Guide Journal:

Whenever you connect with a spirit guide, jot it down in your spirit guide journal. Keep track of your relationship and how they send you messages here. You can use this journal to look back at their messages and see how it unfolded in your life. I can’t tell you how many times something didn’t make sense when I received the message, but a few months or even years later I went back and it all made sense for what I’d gone through.

8. Recipe Journal:

Every witch needs a recipe journal. Whether you’re brewing spells and potions or you’re just doing normal cooking I’ve found so much magic can come through intentional cooking (or baking). Write down recipes and what they mean to you. Tweak them with special correspondences based on what season you or the weather is in.

9. Ancestor Journal:

An ancestor journal can be used as a spirit guide journal or as a true ancestry journal. My ancestors visit me and some of them I consider “spirit guides” – but not all ancestors have to be spirit guides to help you on your spiritual path. Use this journal to track anything that feels good to remember about them. For me that’s recipes, birthdays (natal charts), things they were known for, their favorite things, and memories. The older I get the more I see how much we can be a product of who we come from (for good or bad) and how healing can come from acknowledging that.

10. Daily Planner:

Ahh, it just feels good sometimes to have a daily planner. I won’t lie, I don’t always have one – but when I’m in the right mindset for one, I love how it keeps me together. Use a daily planner in the traditional way, or use it in a witchy way to track the moon, the seasons, your daily card pull or meditation.

11. Correspondences Journal:

Everything has a correspondence…which means there’s a million correspondences. Use this journal to write down correspondences you want to remember – crystals, days of the week, herbs, flowers, seasons…whatever you have a hard time keeping track of in your brain.

12. Book Log:

A book log is a perfect way to write out all of the books you’ve read and takeaways you’ve had from each (especially if you’re borrowing the books from a friend or the library). I also have a really hard time remembering all of the books I want to check out, so writing them down somewhere is super helpful when you’re in the mood for a new book but you don’t want to spend the research time to find one.

13. Tarot Journal:

If you love pulling a daily (or whenever) tarot card, use a tarot journal to track the guidance you receive. Use this journal to document spreads that you’ve made up or ones that work for you.

14. Book of Shadows/Grimoire:

Probably the first journal you’d think of when you think of ‘witchy journal’ – use a book of shadows or a grimoire to document all of your witchy learning and spiritual path. Witches use magical journals to record their spell work and rituals. These journals are sacred records. They help us understand our craft and improve over time.

  • Creating Effective Spell Records
    • When recording a spell, include the intention, components, steps, and date and time. This detail helps track patterns and successful magic elements.
  • Documenting Magical Results
    • After a spell or ritual, document the outcomes. Note any energy shifts, synchronicities, or manifestations. Reflect on how they match your intent. This habit deepens your craft understanding.
  • Learning from Past Workings
    • Reviewing past spell and ritual records offers insights. Identify successful techniques and approaches. Use these lessons in future work. This reflective process is key to a witch’s writing exercises and a refined grimoire.

15. Junk Journal:

Lastly, but I think the most fun – a junk journal. Collect all of that crap you have sitting around you and plop it into a beautiful collaged journal. Create magic from your junk.

Crafting Your First Grimoire https://softspirituality.com/2023/11/03/crafting-your-first-grimoire/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 18:59:22 +0000 A grimoire is a sacred book for spiritual practitioners and witches to record experiences, rituals, spells, and lessons. It's a living document, not a replacement for a spiritual journal, and doesn't have to be shared. Tips for starting one include choosing the right book, personal dedication, organization, recording experiences, and regularly updating.

The post Crafting Your First Grimoire appeared first on Soft Spirituality.

Crafting your first grimoire is an incredibly exciting experience. There’s something so magical about holding a book filled with your own wisdom, rituals, and spiritual discoveries. But before we dive in, let me offer you a little reassurance—your grimoire doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t even have to be finished. Mine is a constant work in progress, and honestly, I love rewriting it with new lessons and fresh perspectives.

So, if you feel the need to start over, reorganize, or even tear out pages and begin again, consider this your official permission slip. Your grimoire is yours, and it should evolve with you. While I think of a grimoire as a more structured counterpart to a spiritual journal, it is not something that needs to be flawless by the first (or tenth) draft. Do what feels right for you—your path, your magic, your book.

What Is a Grimoire?

A grimoire (pronounced grim-war) is a sacred book used by spiritual practitioners and witches to record their magical and spiritual experiences. Think of it as your personal witchy encyclopedia, a collection of knowledge, insights, rituals, spells, and lessons you’ve learned along your journey.

This is the place where you take what you’ve practiced, studied, and experienced, and turn it into a structured, meaningful reference guide for your path.

What a Grimoire Is Not

Before we get into what to include, let’s clear up a few common misconceptions:

1. It’s Not a Replacement for Your Spiritual Journal

Your spiritual journal is where you process your raw experiences—your unfiltered thoughts, dreams, and emotions. It’s messy, personal, and in-the-moment. Your grimoire, on the other hand, is a place for the refined, structured version of those lessons. Think of it as the distilled wisdom from your spiritual journey.

2. It’s Not Set in Stone

A grimoire is a living book. You are allowed to edit, add, remove, and rewrite as often as needed. It’s a reflection of your journey, and just like you, it will change over time.

3. You Don’t Have to Share It With Anyone

Some people pass down their grimoires, but there is zero obligation to show or share yours with anyone—ever. If it feels too personal, keep it private. This is your sacred space.

How to Start Your Grimoire

Ready to begin? Here’s how to get started:

1. Choose the Right Book

Find a journal or notebook that feels special to you. It could be a leather-bound tome, a simple notebook, or even a digital document. Choose something that makes you feel connected to your practice.

2. Create a Dedication Page

Start with a personal dedication. This could be a simple note of intention, a blessing, or even a small ritual to infuse your grimoire with energy.

3. Organize Your Grimoire

Divide your grimoire into sections so you can easily find information when you need it. Common sections include:

4. Record Your Spiritual Growth

Your grimoire isn’t just a reference book—it’s a record of you. Document your personal experiences, dreams, revelations, and rituals.

5. Decorate and Personalize

Let your creativity shine! Add drawings, pressed flowers, handwritten sigils, or anything that makes your grimoire feel uniquely yours.

6. Protect Your Grimoire

Keep it in a safe, sacred space. If you’d like, you can consecrate it with a blessing or protective sigil.

7. Update It Regularly

Your spiritual path is always evolving, and your grimoire should reflect that. Make time to revisit and update it as you learn and grow.

What to Include in Your Grimoire

Now for the fun part—what do you actually put in your grimoire? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are some sections you might want to include:

Spiritual Foundations

  • Your beliefs and core spiritual values
  • What kind of witch or practitioner you are
  • Lessons from your spiritual awakening

Energy Work & Protection

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, your grimoire will help you deepen your connection to yourself, your craft, and the mystical world around you.

So go ahead—write, rewrite, experiment, and explore. Let your grimoire be a mirror of your soul and a testament to your magical journey.

It involves authentic reflection, gratitude practice, tracking emotions and moon phases, dream journaling, meditation reflections, and documenting rituals and synchronicities.

I have been keeping a spiritual journal since day one of my spiritual awakening and I cannot tell you how grateful I am to my past self for doing it. I’ve referenced this journal more than almost any other reference material in my life and it’s something I know I’ll always appreciate. If you haven’t started your spiritual journal yet, this is your nudge to start. Whether you are exploring moon magic, seeking guidance from spirit guides, or simply looking to reconnect with the magic in everyday life, spiritual journaling is a powerful tool to document and enhance your path.

In this blog post, we will chat about the practice of spiritual journaling, exploring what it is, how to start, and some types of journal entries to keep. By the end, you’ll be ready to unlock the potential of your spiritual journey and rediscover the magic within you.

What is Spiritual Journaling?

Spiritual journaling is the practice of documenting the journey you’ve been on in your spiritual life. It’s a way to document your spiritual explorations, gaining insights into what you believe, experiences, and spiritual growth. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner of moon magic, connecting with spirit guides, or simply seeking to find the magic in the mundane, keeping a spiritual journal is an invaluable tool for personal and spiritual development.

Grimoire versus Spiritual Journal

You might be wondering why I’m saying spiritual journal and not a grimoire or book of shadows. When I talk about a spiritual journal I’m meaning a messy imperfect way to keep track of your daily spiritual journey, but when I talk about a grimoire or book of shadows I tend to think of curated reference books and documentation. A spiritual journal is about documenting the process as it unfolds whereas a grimoire/BoS will show you the outcome and lessons learned from the process.

How to start your spiritual journaling practice

Starting a spiritual journaling practice is simple, but it requires dedication and authenticity. Here are some steps to get you started:

  1. Choose Your Journal: It might sound silly, but picking a journal that resonates with you and you enjoy writing in is a huge part of starting this practice. It can be a physical notebook, a digital journaling app, or even a dedicated blog. What’s important is that it feels right for you and you’re comfortable with your choice.
  2. Remember your ‘why’: When starting a journaling practice I want you to tap into the reason why you want to have this practice. Write it on the front page of your journal to remind you. What do you hope to achieve with this practice. Whether it’s deepening your connection to your spirit guides or exploring mundane magic, having a clear intention will guide your journaling journey.
  3. Create a Ritual: Find a rhythm that works for you with journaling. Creating a sacred space or time to journal can help you connect in faster and set the mood for you to keep up with your journaling practice.
  4. Write without Judgment: Don’t hold back, the more honest you can be, the better. Record the good and the bad, your emotions, experiences, thoughts, lessons learned.
  5. Reflect: From time to time, pick up your journal and look back at how far you’ve come. This always motivates me and encourages me to continue growing.

Essential Materials for Your Spiritual Journal

Starting a reflective journaling or soul journaling practice can change your life. It all starts with the right materials. The tools you pick can deeply affect your writing and your spiritual journey.

Choose a journal that matches your style and beliefs. Look for ones with thick pages that can handle mistakes. Some like lined pages, while others prefer blank or grid-ruled. Pick a size and binding that’s easy to carry, so you can write anywhere.

Creating Sacred Space for Your Writing Practice

To start a contemplative writing or mindfulness journal, you need more than just a pen and paper. You must create a special space for focus, inspiration, and peace. This space will help you connect with your inner self and unlock the power of this ritual.

Setting the Right Atmosphere

Find a quiet, distraction-free spot that feels right to you. It could be a cozy corner, a peaceful garden, or a writing nook. Use lighting, incense, or music to create a calm atmosphere. Let your senses help you get into a contemplative state.

Choosing the Perfect Time

Pick a time when you can be fully present and not rushed. Many prefer early morning or late evening for deeper thoughts. Find the best time for you that lets you dive into journaling fully.

Establishing Physical Boundaries

  • Clear your space of distractions like electronics or clutter.
  • Choose a comfortable, ergonomic seat for relaxation.
  • Have your journal and writing tools ready to signal it’s time to write.

Creating a nurturing space for your writing or journaling practice helps you fully engage. It unlocks the deep benefits of this soulful journey.

13 Ideas of what to write in your spiritual journal

There are lots types of journal entries that you might want to keep during your spiritual journey. Here are some of the ones I like to write:

  1. Free write: Reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Write about the insights you’ve gained from your daily life, meditation, or spiritual practices. I’d argue this is the most important type of entry to write.
  2. Track your emotions and the moon: If you’re interested in the phases of the moon and their influence on your life, tracking moon magic can help you follow lunar cycles, rituals, and their effects on your spiritual practice/daily life.
  3. Mundane Magic: Celebrate the everyday magic you find in your life. Document the small moments where you might feel synchronicity, serendipity, or awe that remind you of the magic that exists in the ordinary that’s around us all the time.
  4. Gratitude Practice: Express gratitude for the blessings and positive experiences in your life. Acknowledging and recording what you’re thankful for can foster a positive mindset and attract more positivity into your life.
  5. Meditation Reflections: Describe your meditation sessions, mindfulness exercises, or time spent in your heart space. If you’re like me, I bet a lot of things come up during your meditations and by writing down what happened during your meditation/time in your heart space you’ll be able to remember the guidance that came through.
  6. Ritual Documentation: Detail any rituals, ceremonies, or spiritual practices you’ve tries. This includes the steps you followed, the intentions you set, and the outcomes you experienced.
  7. Synchronicity and Signs Received: Record instances of meaningful coincidences or synchronicities in your life. These moments often hold significant messages from the universe.
  8. Spirit Guides: Whenever you connect with a spirit guide, jot it down in your spirit guide journal. Keep track of your relationship and how they send you messages here. You can use this journal to look back at their messages and see how it unfolded in your life. I can’t tell you how many times something didn’t make sense when I received the message, but a few months or even years later I went back and it all made sense for what I’d gone through.
  9. Manifestations and Intentions: Detail your goals, desires, and intentions. Reflect on your progress in aligning your thoughts and actions with what you’re calling in. This is a fun one to look back on.
  10. Channeled Writing: Create pages that you dedicate to your channeled or automatic writing practice. Set an intention then put your pen to the paper and allow whatever wants to come out spill out onto the page. (Check out our Introduction to Channeled Writing workbook on Etsy)
  11. Correspondences Journal: Everything has a correspondence…which means there’s a million correspondences. Use this journal to write down correspondences you want to remember – crystals, days of the week, herbs, flowers, seasons…whatever you have a hard time keeping track of in your brain.
  12. Book Log: A book log is a perfect way to write out all of the books you’ve read and takeaways you’ve had from each.
  13. Tarot Guidance: Write down the card pulls you receive or the tarot spreads you use.

Advanced Techniques for Soul Journaling

As you grow in your spiritual journaling, you might want to try more advanced techniques. These methods can reveal deep insights, help you process emotions, and connect with the divine in amazing ways.

Dream Documentation

Dreams often hold messages and insights from your subconscious or the spiritual realm. Keeping a dream journal can help you decipher their meanings. Messages find us while we’re sleeping and if you’ve ever kept a dream log before, you’ve probably noticed the more you log, the more you remember, and the more you remember, the more you can find those messages and truths that have come out while you’re dreaming.

Shadow Work Exercises

Exploring your shadow is key in soul journaling. Shadow work means facing your darker, hidden parts with kindness and bravery. Through writing and reflection, you can accept and use these parts for your strength and self-love.

Spiritual Synchronicities

As you journal more, you might notice more meaningful coincidences. These events can guide you to understand your spiritual purpose and the connection of all things. Writing about these moments can help you see the divine patterns in your life.

Using these advanced techniques can change you deeply, increase your self-awareness, and connect you more with the sacred. Be open and ready to explore the mysteries of your inner world.

Overcoming Common Journaling Challenges

Keeping up with a spiritual journal can seem tough, but it’s doable. The biggest hurdle is often finding time to write. Make journaling a priority and set aside moments each day. Begin with just 10-15 minutes and grow your time as you enjoy it more.

Writer’s block is another common issue. Try changing your writing spot, using prompts, or meditating before you start. Your journal is for expressing yourself freely. Let your intuition lead, even if it’s not what you expected.

Be kind to yourself and keep a positive attitude towards journaling. Acknowledge your small wins and be patient. Showing up and writing is what counts. Keep going, and you’ll grow closer to your journal’s power for inner peace and self-discovery.

In the wildness of daily life, it’s easy to forget the magic that exists within and around us. Spiritual journaling is a way to reconnect with that magic, whether you’re diving deep into moon magic, seeking guidance from spirit guides, or simply celebrating the mundane magic of a simple life. Remember, your spiritual journey is a unique and enchanting path, and by documenting it through journaling, you can ensure that you never lose sight of how truly magical it can be. So, pick up your journal and begin your spiritual journey today – the magic is waiting to be discovered.

Automatic writing, also known as channeled writing, is one of the most magical tools in my spiritual toolbox. If you’re feeling called to connect with your guides and receive messages through writing, this practice may be just what you need. In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to get started and deepen your experience with channeled writing.

What is Channeled Writing?

Channeled writing is the practice of opening yourself to messages from your spirit guides, higher self, or loved ones in the spiritual realm. It is a form of automatic writing, where you put pen to paper (or hands to keyboard) and allow the words to flow without conscious thought. Instead of controlling what you write, you surrender to the process, letting your hand move freely as messages come through.

Some people receive clear words or phrases, while others may experience more abstract messages—symbols, scribbles, or even emotions that take shape in writing. Trust that whatever comes through is exactly what you need in that moment.

How to Begin Channeled Writing

1. Create a Sacred Space

Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can write undisturbed. To set the mood:

  • Light candles or burn incense to raise the energy.
  • Play soft, instrumental music if it helps you relax.
  • Hold a crystal (like amethyst or selenite) to enhance your connection.
  • Take a few deep breaths to center yourself before beginning.

2. Set a Clear Intention

Before you start, set a strong intention for your session. You might ask to connect with a specific spirit guide, receive insight on a situation, or simply be open to any messages that come through.

To ground yourself in this intention:

  • Place your hand on your heart.
  • Take a few deep breaths, feeling yourself become present.
  • Silently or aloud, say: “I am open to receiving guidance for my highest good.”

If you’re unsure what to ask, here are 18 Questions to Ask Your Spirit Guides to help guide your practice.

3. Relax and Begin Writing

Once you feel ready:

  • Take a few deep breaths to release any tension.
  • Place your pen on paper or fingers on the keyboard.
  • Write whatever comes through, without judgment or overthinking.
  • If you feel drawn to doodle, scribble, or write nonsense words, let it happen—sometimes messages come in unexpected ways.
  • If nothing comes through right away, be patient. Just keep writing, even if it’s only “I don’t know what to write” until the energy begins to flow.

4. Trust the Process

One of the biggest challenges with channeled writing is learning to trust the messages. Doubt can creep in, making you question whether what you’re writing is real or just your imagination.

Here’s how to cultivate trust:

  • Let go of the need for immediate validation.
  • Accept that not all messages will make sense right away.
  • Notice patterns or recurring themes in your writing over time.
  • Reflect on past writings—often, their meaning becomes clear later.

5. Close the Session with Gratitude

When you feel the flow slowing down, it’s time to close the session. Here’s how:

  • Take a few deep breaths to ground yourself.
  • Thank the guides or energies you connected with for their wisdom.
  • Set an intention to integrate the guidance you received.
  • Express gratitude for yourself and your practice.

6. Practice Without Expectations

Like any spiritual practice, channeled writing takes time to develop. The more you do it, the stronger your connection will become. Try to write every day, even for just a few minutes. Some days will feel effortless, while others might be more challenging—and that’s okay.

Give yourself permission to explore without pressure. Some messages may be profound, others simple. Trust that all of it is part of the journey.
